FORMER Premier League goalkeeper Asmir Begovic believes Colchester United supporters will have found the collapse of John Terry’s proposed takeover bid “difficult to accept” - but says the club remains in capable hands under the Cowleys.
Begovic, who played alongside ex-Chelsea captain Terry during his time at Stamford Bridge, said the prospect of such a high-profile figure becoming involved at the U’s had understandably raised expectations among supporters.
A bid to buy Colchester by a consortium including Terry collapsed in June after several months of discussions with U’s owner, Robbie Cowling.

Speaking to Hajper, Begovic said: “The situation is undoubtedly disappointing for Colchester fans.
“It is easy to let your hopes rise and begin dreaming of such high-profile appointments, so the outcome must be difficult to accept.
“Having said that, the club remains in capable hands with the Cowley brothers, who have extensive experience and a proven track record of securing results across the EFL.”
Terry had been leading a consortium pursuing a takeover of the League Two club earlier this year, with his potential involvement generating significant attention around the JobServe Community Stadium.
The former England defender enjoyed an illustrious playing career, winning five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and the Champions League with Chelsea, as well as earning 78 caps at international level.
Begovic believes Terry’s arrival would have represented a boost for Colchester - both in terms of profile and the experience he could bring - but expects the former centre-back and his group to regroup after the unsuccessful bid.

“It would have been exciting to see a figure of John Terry’s stature return to the game,” added former AFC Bournemouth and Stoke City keeper Begovic.
“His involvement would have been a significant positive for the club, but they’ll readjust now and keep looking forward.”
The Cowleys remain at the helm as Colchester focus on their League Two campaign, with the brothers having built considerable EFL experience during spells with Lincoln City, Huddersfield Town, Portsmouth and the U’s.
