AFTER the frustrations of another game called off due to the weather, it was with much anticipation that we were able to see a Colchester United game on Saturday.

As things turned out though, maybe another postponement would not have such a bad thing.

Before I get into the game, it would be remiss of me not to mention the pitch.

We had the embarrassment of having our first game of the season called off due to it being waterlogged and suffered the same fate, last week.

I know there was a downpour, but surely in this day and age a professional club should have a pitch that can stand the weather?

The postponement was unfair on the travelling Grimsby fans and even on Saturday, you could see the surface was not up to the standard required.

It makes it harder to play football on - we need to add every percentage we can to help our game and not have a pitch that works against us.

Anyway, enough about that subject for now and let's look at the Accrington game.

Without sounding too dramatic, I think they're one of the worst sides to visit North Essex this season.

Gazette:

We did not play well by any stretch of the imagination and caused our own problems, but I bet the away side couldn’t get on the bus with a point quick enough, after the final whistle.

The U’s looked very unbalanced down the flanks and had very few ideas going forward.

Credit to Noah Chilvers for his goal and backing himself from range, but we should have been running rings around their back line who looked very uncomfortable when pressed.

Accrington got away with it, as we were very slow to react and gave them too much respect on the ball.

Once they went down to ten men shortly after the restart, it should been game over and three points to us.

But of course, it is never that simple and by gifting then an equaliser though an own goal that could well have been prevented by greater communication, we were left shaking our heads and wondering just what can go wrong next.

The fact that we claimed a point and the bottom two both lost meant the weekend was not a total disaster.

However, it was the manner of the point that was the issue; we played with fear and a nervousness that has not previously been seen under the Cowleys.

Gazette:

Then we failed to change anything in either formation or personnel to capitalise on the man advantage, the quick interplay we saw at Harrogate was missing and at times, it felt like we were actually scared to back ourselves and take chances.

Had it been a game played under previous managers, I think the full-time response would have been very different.

There have been improvements in other games and the absence of Arthur Read was telling, but we have to be relentless in how we play.

We're still looking over our shoulders at the drop and chances are, there will not be an easier team than we faced on Saturday in the coming games.

It was two points dropped rather than one gained and we put more self-induced pressure on the upcoming games against Sutton and Salford, which are must win.

Frankly, if we play like we did against Accrington, it will be a hard task.

We played better against Harrogate even though we lost and that is how we need to be week in, week out, taking the game to the opposition rather than allowing them to dictate the game and of course, taking our chances when they appear.

It is not easy being a U’s fan, but let's all get behind the lads at Sutton and fingers crossed for a more positive result and display.

Up the U’s.
