COLCHESTER United needed to make a bold managerial appointment, given their perilous League Two position.

And in bringing in Danny Cowley alongside his younger brother Nicky, they have done exactly that.

In the Cowleys, they have appointed a managerial duo who are proven winners.

And they are exactly what Colchester need.

It is difficult to think of a better choice as the U’s new head coach than Danny Cowley.

Indeed, chairman Robbie Cowling has pulled off quite a coup.

Cowley has a hugely impressive CV as a boss, in a career which has seen the brothers rise from non-league success to managing in the Championship.

They have shown in the past that they can transform the fortunes of clubs and have enjoyed plenty of success in League Two, not least guiding Lincoln City to promotion to the third tier, in the 2018-19 season.

I was at a bouncing Sincil Bank for Colchester’s final game of that season, when they surprisingly won 3-0 against the newly-crowned champions.

Despite the unexpected scoreline, it was noticeable just how vibrant and energetic the stadium was that day, with the Cowleys at the forefront of such excitement.

Prior to that, they changed around Braintree Town's fortunes, leading them to their highest-ever finish in rapid time.

Without doubt, they have the potential to transform the whole atmosphere at the JobServe Community Stadium, which is currently at a pretty low ebb given the U’s fortunes on the pitch over the past three and a half seasons where they have been battling for League Two survival.

It is almost a year to the day since the Cowleys were last in management, at League One club Portsmouth.

Colchester are getting a managerial duo who are fully recharged and ready to embrace their next opportunity head on.

Speaking to the Southend Echo’s Chris Phillips last November, Danny said he was keen to ensure his next opportunity was the correct one for his career.

“We're missing football every day and waiting for the next opportunity but it has to be the right one for us,” he said.

“The success we had at Concord and Lincoln in particular was around working with really good people who were hard-working and had the club's best interest at heart.”

The Cowleys know they will need to hit the ground running, given Colchester’s lowly league position and recent dismal form.

Their first priority will be to lead Colchester away from the relegation peril they currently find themselves in but the fact that they have been appointed in the opening days of the January transfer window is significant.

It will give them some valuable time to liaise with the likes of sporting director Dmitri Halajko and head of recruitment Ross Embleton in identifying the key requirements needed in order to bolster the U’s squad and give them the best chance possible of moving up the League Two table, as quickly as possible.
