COLCHESTER United's win over Doncaster Rovers was an important one.

Important for the fans too who were desperate for some sort of solace from the recent and terrible defeats on the road.

It was also nice to see our club not propping up League Two for another week.

But whilst the convincing 3-0 win was a step along the path to safety, by no means are the U’s out of these dark and dingy woods yet.

There are still problems to fix, mostly away from home, where something needs to change to reverse the worst away record in our division, especially when many of our up and coming trips are to teams also struggling in the bottom third with us.

However, it feels like when we play at home, the players' confidence levels increase and they seem much more comfortable with their football in the familiar surroundings.

Although it ended in ultimate defeat, even the PJT game on Wednesday against Bristol Rovers was a good performance from our guys.

Hand on heart though, I am happy enough to be out of that competition, given our current league plight.

Let’s be honest, Matt Bloomfield’s honeymoon period did not even make it out of the airport lounge.

The new face and different broom of management did not have the effect that it often can do, however I do hope that with a few players returning from injury and a few points or more away from home, maybe, just maybe, Matt will be re-booking his flights with us.

Gazette:

Back to last Saturday and I thought the U’s controlled the game very well from start to finish.

With the greatest of respect, I cannot recall a period when I thought Doncaster were going to hurt us.

I was delighted for our three goalscorers. Alex Newby is the new king of free-kicks it seems and long may he reign if he can deliver finishes like that again.

Luke Hannant rewarded what feels like a strong arm around the shoulder from the gaffer with a quality finish for our third, and what can I say about “that goal” from Samson Tovide?

I am really pleased for our young forward. He looks bigger and stronger than when I last saw him properly in a U’s shirt and well worth his starting place ahead of Freddie, who I was delighted to see back on the score sheet himself on Wednesday. That will do last season's top scorer the power of good.

Gazette:

For Samson, let us keep our fingers crossed that this is the start of something good for him and us.

He is a centre-forward so let’s keep as such and not shift him around positions to accommodate more senior players, and when he needs to play with another forward, which I would like to see, let’s make sure it is the right match.

We are only going to get out of this mess if we can score goals, so let us make the most of what we have.

I was also very happy to see Emyr Huws return to the pitch after injury. It was a cruel blow to lose him for nearly half the season.

His influence, plus having Samson back, together with the impending return of Appiah, Akinde and Skuse, will be crucial over what I annually call our toughest part of the season, being December and January.

These months include some almost six-pointer games over our close rivals to manage and some difficult away trips such as Mansfield next Saturday.

After delivering a more positive display last week it’s annoying not to be playing tomorrow, although I do believe that the U21’s are at home to Southampton with a 1pm kick-off up at the Jobserve Community Stadium if you are looking for a game to watch.

And so all credit to the U’s and the players for the three points.

Let’s keep hacking at the undergrowth to get out of these woods, and maybe the U’s can turn this one bright spark into the resilient flame that ourselves as fans are so desperate to see.

Thanks for your support this week as always. Up the U’s!
