FORMER Colchester United head coach John McGreal has left his role as manager of Swindon Town after a month in the role.

McGreal, along with former U's goalkeeper coach Rene Gilmartin who was assistant manager with the Robins, have agreed to mutually terminate their contracts with the League Two club.

In a joint statement, they said: “This is a decision we both have made, as we feel we are not able to carry out our duties as Manager and Assistant Manager.

"Our intention from day one was to build a football team to compete in this league, but unfortunately due to the current circumstances the club is facing, we do not feel we are able to do that.

"As mentioned earlier this week, we have signings ready to be announced, however the legal proceedings involving the ownership has not allowed us to do so, making our positions at the club untenable.”

McGreal took over as Swindon boss on May 26, with Gilmartin joining six days later.

Chief executive Steve Anderson has also left Swindon, which is currently involved in legal proceedings regarding its ownership.

Swindon Town said in a statement: "We would like to thank both, for their hard work and professionalism during their short stay at the County Ground under very difficult circumstances.

"We would like to wish them both the best for the future."

Gazette:

McGreal's role at Swindon was his first since leaving Colchester, last summer.

He spent a total of 11 years as a coach at the JobServe Community Stadium, including four years as head coach.

He led the U's to the League Two play-offs and League Cup quarter-finals for only the second time in their history, last season.

McGreal also helped the U’s compete for a top-seven finish in his first three years in charge, along with helping a number of talented players progress to a higher level, after shining under his management.

He parted company with Colchester last summer, with his assistant Steve Ball succeeding him as head coach.
