COLCHESTER United youngster Kwame Poku is celebrating after making his international debut.

The 19-year-old attacker was handed his Ghana bow on Sunday, after coming on as a 79th-minute substitute in their 3-1 victory over Sao Tome and Principe, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Poku, who was called into the Black Stars squad for the first time earlier this month, helped them claim victory in their final 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Group C qualifier.

The skilful attacker, who has made 73 league and cup appearances for the U's, will be delighted to have made his international bow having not featured in the 1-1 draw with South Africa, last week.

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey and Swansea City striker Andre Ayew both started for Ghana, while Crystal Palace attacker Jordan Ayew also featured.

Jordan Ayew netted a penalty for the Black Stars in their win over the Falcons, while Nicholas Opoku and Abdul Rahman Baba each netted their first goals for their country.

Ghana finished third in their group to book their place at the Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Cameroon.

Poku's Colchester team-mate Callum Harriott is back on international duty, tomorrow night.

The 27-year-old winger is set to be involved in their World Cup Group F qualifying game against the Bahamas.

Harriott was named in Guyana's starting line-up for their qualifier defeat against Trinidad and Tobago, which ended 3-0.

Former Colchester defenders Matt Briggs and Miquel Scarlett will also hoping to be involved, against the Bahamas.

Meanwhile, Colchester attacker Luke Gambin scored a superb goal for Malta in their 2-2 draw with Slovakia.

The 28-year-old, who is currently away on loan at Newport County, netted a fine opener for his country who then went 2-0 up in the Group H World Cup qualifier, before being pegged back to a draw.
