BRIGHTLINGSEA 24

IPSWICH MAGPIES 25

Eastern Counties division one south

BRIGHTLINGSEA will be disappointed they did not close out a win after slipping to a narrow defeat against Ipswich Magpies.

Given the two comprehensive defeats by the same opposition last season, this was a highly creditable result for the hosts. Nevertheless, they will be kicking themselves that they could not claim victory, especially having led 14-7 at the break through tries by Sam Day and Paul Smith, both converted by Smith.

But for some poor execution, Brightlingsea's lead might have been greater.

Alex Annis was particularly effective in the lineout and together with his back row colleagues Taylor Houston and Dan Clarke, had a fine game in the loose.

They were ably supported by the tight forwards, who carried effectively all afternoon.

Sam Day added two further tries in the second period but discipline let the home side down.

Ipswich capitalized on Brightlingsea's two yellow cards to draw to within two points of their hosts.

And they sealed the win with the last penalty kick of the match.

Man of the match for the home side was Frazer Palmer, an outstanding former Brightlingsea junior making his senior debut at fullback.

The club also said goodbye to Tony Day, who played his last game before moving out of the area and giving his customary whole-hearted performance.
