MAX Jolliffe deserved to make his EFL debut for Colchester United.
That’s the view of U’s head coach Danny Cowley, after handing the teenage midfielder his senior bow in their triumph over Fleetwood Town.
Jolliffe came on as a late substitute for Arthur Read in Colchester’s 3-0 victory, at the JobServe Community Stadium.

It was a maiden first team appearance for the 19-year-old, who signed his first professional contract for the U’s last summer and has recently spent time on loan at Pitching In Isthmian League division north side, Maldon and Tiptree.
U’s boss Cowley said: “It’s such a privilege to be a professional footballer.
“When you think about how many people in this country play football, it’s so many and only so few and 0.01 per cent are able to be in professional football.
“He’s made his Football League debut and it’s incredible, because he’s been playing in Step Eight of English football with Maldon and Tiptree in the first half of the season.

“It’s not something I just give out.
“For me, it’s such an honour to be a professional footballer and you have to really earn it.”
Jolliffe joined Colchester in the summer of 2022, after leaving Arsenal.
After featuring for the U’s under-18s, he made a number of appearances for the under-21s in the 2023-24 campaign and has continued that, this season.
Jolliffe has recently been training with Colchester’s first team and was an unused substitute for their 2-1 win over Port Vale last week, prior to making his senior debut for them against Fleetwood.
“He comes in every day with the ambition of wanting to get better and I’m so pleased that he was able to get on the pitch,” added Cowley.
“We brought him on because we really needed his energy and tenacity.”
