DANNY Cowley is hoping he can welcome players back to his depleted Colchester United squad ahead of their home clash with in-form Doncaster Rovers tonight.

The U’s were without a host of injured players for their game at Notts County last weekend, while both Samson Tovide and Tom Dallison will miss the rest of the season due to suspension.

Colchester need a point from their remaining two matches to secure their League Two status and currently lie three points above Sutton United, with a game in hand.

U’s boss Cowley said: “We hope there’s a chance of having players back on Tuesday, because we need them.

“The two suspensions have obviously hurt us and we need a couple back, for sure.

“We’ve very light.”

Cowley restored Jayden Richardson to his starting line-up at Notts County last weekend for the first time since March 9.

The on-loan Aberdeen full-back played in a more advanced role on the left flank, as Cowley shuffled his pack to deal with the unavailability within his squad.

Gazette:

“Jayden’s a right-back who had to play left-wing but that’s where we were,” said Cowley.

“I thought Jayden did fine.

“When you have so many injuries like we have, you have two choices really.

“You either dilute the whole team or you say well actually, against a possession-based team, Tom Hopper and Cam McGeehan do a really good job.

“Tom has run himself out and looked tired.

“You look at your top of your team, then you look at your right side and Jay Mingi and Jayden Fevrier have done really well, on that right-hand side.

“We wanted to keep those partnerships that we like going but it meant that we didn’t really have anybody who could play on the left.”

Colchester are hoping to make home advantage count in their next two matches, with tonight’s clash with Doncaster Rovers followed by them hosting Crewe Alexandra, on Saturday.

The U’s had more than 750 fans at Meadow Lane for their game at Notts County, last weekend.

Cowley added: “The supporters are incredible and they were the stars of the show.

“I was really proud just to see that many.

“I said to the players before the game – they’re starting to believe in you guys.

“Nearly 800 travelled all this way to support us after the season we’ve had.

“That is amazing and it’s something that the club should be really, really proud of.

“We have to keep growing this feeling.

“We’re at home and nobody comes to our ground and gets an easy ride.

“It’s our ground; a successful team has good home form and the reason they have good home form is because they use their pitch to their advantage.

“It’s for us to be aggressive, to be on the front foot, to defend early, to try to win the ball back quickly and then to be really progressive and purposeful, with our play.

“We want our players thinking forward, playing forward, running forward.

“We’ll try and be the best version of ourselves.”
