DANNY Cowley admits Colchester United will need another ‘huge effort’ from both players and fans to help them secure another victory when they host Grimsby Town tonight.

The U’s can take a big step towards securing their League Two status with a win when they take on the Mariners, at the JobServe Community Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm).

Colchester will head into the game full of confidence following their 3-2 victory over Crawley Town last weekend, where nearly 1,000 U’s fans cheered them to victory at Broadfield Stadium.

Cowley believes they need a similar collective effort tonight – and the U’s head coach is urging everyone to play their part.

Cowley said: “It’s going to need another huge effort on Tuesday.

“It’s so good that we’re at home.

“All the people of Colchester, all the people of Essex, anyone who has Colchester United in their heart, I implore to get to the ground and support us like they did against Stockport and Wrexham, because they can make a huge difference for us.

“It’s another really important game in the history of this football club.”

Gazette:

Colchester head into the match sitting one point above the relegation zone with four games remaining, following their win at Crawley.

They host a Grimsby side who sit five points and one place above them in the table, having played one game more.

“The level of performance is what gives me confidence,” said Cowley.

“The level of performance has been really consistent since I’ve been here really, game in, game out.

“If we can maintain the same levels, then we’d hope to gain the points that we need.”

Colchester showed plenty of resilience at Crawley, needing less than two minutes to regain their lead through Cameron McGeehan after Klaidi Lolas had cancelled out Tom Hopper’s opener.

Hopper then scored again after half-time for the U’s, meaning Harry Forster’s stoppage-time header proved only a consolation for Crawley.

Cowley said: “We’re a different animal, in that respect – we don’t feel sorry for ourselves anymore.

“We know nobody is going to help us and we’ve got to keep helping ourselves.

“It was a really bad goal to concede but we showed an excellent response and to get that second goal just before half-time was important and the third goal just after half-time, they’re two great times to score.”
