DANNY Cowley wants Colchester United fans to get an early night and go easy on the beers tonight so they can help cheer his side to victory against Wrexham.

The U’s play in front of a sell-out crowd at the JobServe Community Stadium tomorrow against a Reds side who are going for promotion, under Phil Parkinson.

Colchester are yet to lose at home since Danny and Nicky Cowley were appointed as their new management team in early January.

And as they continue to battle against relegation from League Two, boss Cowley wants U’s fans to play their part and get behind their team.

Cowley said: “Friday night, supporters, you’ve got to go to bed early, not have too many beers, try to stay in a good place, get up on Saturday and be the best version of yourself and really get behind the boys, because we need you!

“For us, to achieve what we want to do and retain our status in the division, we’re going to need everybody with a Colchester United in their heart to play a part.

“Five of our last seven games are at home and we love playing at home.

“We can feel the connection with the supporters growing by the day.

“I think they see a team now that’s fighting for everything, doing all they can to win.

“I think the supporters can see a group that are giving their heart and soul for the team and for the club and for the community.

“We know how much this club means to so many people.

“We wake up every morning with a responsibility and a privilege by the way to know that we’re doing a job that has such an influence and such an impact on so many people.

“This is why we do it, this is why we love it and we’re so excited for the weekend.

“Maybe if you’re an Arsenal, or Manchester City, or Liverpool supporter, maybe you come to the game and expect to be entertained.

“It’s almost like going to the theatre but in the lower leagues, this is not what it is.

“In the lower leagues, you come but you have an opportunity to influence and impact the outcome of the game and how exciting is that?”

Colchester claimed four points from a possible six over the Easter period and are unbeaten in four matches, in League Two.

The U’s currently lie a point adrift of safety with seven matches remaining but do have games in hand on the teams around them.

“We’re enjoying the fight, we feel like we’re winning the fight,” added Cowley.

“There’s lots to be positive about, going into Saturday’s game against Wrexham.

“We want to put a 90-minute performance together – that is the aim.

“We want to have that welcome to our stadium and crank the intensity and the purpose of play in that early phase, to really get the opponent on the backfoot and to be the protagonist in the game.

“It’s our home, it’s on our terms and that’s what we’re working towards.”
