DANNY Cowley is urging anyone with a Colchester connection to back his U's side this weekend as they go in search of a vital win.

Colchester United host Walsall tomorrow in League Two, their first game at the JobServe Community Stadium for a month following two frustrating postponements.

The U's are looking to secure a crucial victory as they bid to move out of the League Two relegation zone.

And boss Cowley says Colchester's 'brilliant' supporters can play a big part in helping them get three points, against the Saddlers.

Cowley said: “The supporters have been starved of football, so we’re really hopeful that they’ll come out and get behind the players.

“They’ve been brilliant since the moment that we came in and we really need them – there’s no hiding place from that.

“We absolutely understand our part in it and we have to make sure that we put in a performance that they can get behind.

“If ever a team has needed their supporters, it’s us right now.

“For anybody that has any connection with Colchester and has Colchester in their hearts, get to the game on Saturday and get behind the players and see the very best in them, because this is what great supporters do, even in the most difficult moments.

“I totally respect that this club has had some challenges in recent years but for those supporters to stay loyal and together and to get right behind the group.

“It’s so important for us.

“I watch the Premier League and it’s a bit like watching football through glass.

“I don’t even know if they’re supporters anymore, they just look like spectators to me.

“They’re calm and they just expect to be entertained, a bit like if you were going to the theatre.

“For me, the difference between a spectator and a supporter is that a spectator comes and expects to be entertained whereas a supporter can actually impact and influence the outcome of the game.

“I know we have great supporters and I just want them to come on Saturday knowing that they can have a huge influence on the outcome of the game.

“If they can see the very best in the players and get right behind them, don’t underestimate the influence that has – the positivity, enthusiasm and energy they can create.”

Cowley has pointed to the atmosphere for Colchester's eventful 3-3 draw against Forest Green Rovers last month as an example of how supporters can play their part in helping their team.

The U's came back from 2-0 down to go 3-2 up before the visitors claimed a point, in what was arguably the best atmosphere at the JobServe Community Stadium this season.

Cowley added: “I genuinely believe that the supporters can have a huge influence, particularly with seven of the last 11 games being at home.

“Do you remember the second-half comeback against Forest Green? The influence that the supporters had and that feeling that was in the stadium.

“This is what we need to create and just fuel the players – it will give them so much confidence and belief."
