COLCHESTER United boss Danny Cowley and his assistant Nicky Cowley will head to Walsall's home clash with Doncaster Rovers this afternoon, following the postponement of their game with Stockport County.

The U's have a free Saturday, after their fixture against the promotion-chasing Hatters was called off at around 9.20am this morning due to a waterlogged pitch at the JobServe Community Stadium, following an inspection by referee Scott Oldham.

Colchester's next game is now the long trip to play play-off chasing Barrow next weekend, which will be followed by back-to-back home matches against Doncaster (March 12) and Walsall (March 16).

Cowley told Col U TV:  "We'll train this morning and then Nicky and I are going to head off to Walsall-Doncaster, because we have both teams to play in the coming weeks."

The postponement of Colchester's home clash with Stockport was their second in the space of three weeks, following the call off of their scheduled clash with Grimsby Town, last month.

"I'm so disappointed for everybody involved really," said Cowley.

"I feel of course for our supporters and the Stockport people - I know their players travelled yesterday and some of their supporters will have travelled last night or were about to travel this morning.

"It certainly wasn't for the want of trying - everybody at the club has done everything they can to get the game on and the covers have been on since Tuesday but unfortunately, we've just had significant rain.

"I read it was the wettest February in history, in this part of the world, so it's been difficult and of course when the wind has been as aggressive as it is, sometimes the rain doesn't stay on the covers and then the ground gets saturated.

"Disappointing for us - we'd obviously prepped and felt we were in a good place after two away games and we were really looking forward to coming back home and playing what is a really good team, in Stockport County.

"We have to get over the disappointment of the game being called off quickly.

"I just want to thank the groundstaff here, David (Gregory), Andy (Carmichael) - everyone was out early doing our best to try to get the game on but unfortunately, we were fighting a losing battle."
