FORMER Colchester United loanee Matty Longstaff has signed for Toronto FC.

The 23-year-old has agreed a two-year deal with an option of a third at the Major Soccer League club, where he has linked up with English head coach, John Herdman.

Longstaff has been without a club since leaving Newcastle, last year.

Herdman told the Toronto FC website: “I'm thrilled to welcome Matty to our squad.

“His Premier League experience and dynamic playing style will add depth to our midfield and complement our tactical blueprint.”

Longstaff spent the first half of last season on loan at Colchester from Premier League club Newcastle United, before his spell at the JobServe Community Stadium was cruelly cut short.

Gazette:

Longstaff, who made ten appearances on loan at the U's, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee after coming on as a substitute in Colchester’s 1-0 win at Gillingham, on Boxing Day, 2022.

He was released from his contract at boyhood Newcastle, last summer but despite his contract ending, was allowed to continue his rehabilitation at his former club.

He came through the Magpies’ academy and scored their winner on his Premier League debut against Manchester United in October, 2019.

Longstaff netted three further goals in a total of 20 appearances, for Newcastle.
