DANNY Cowley believes League Two is more competitive than ever, this season.

The Colchester United head coach is striving to lift his team away from relegation danger, having taken charge at the JobServe Community Stadium last month.

The U's face another tough game this weekend with the visit of play-off chasing Accrington Stanley, who were one of the teams relegated from League One last season.

And Cowley, who led Lincoln City to the League Two title in the 2018-19 season, believes English football's fourth tier is as challenging as it has ever been.

Cowley said: “This is the best League Two that I’ve seen.

“When you consider the teams that came down from League One, which was so competitive last year and was the best League One that I’d seen and naturally, four teams that wouldn’t normally get relegated get relegated out of League One like of MK Dons, who should never be a League Two team to be honest.

“Then you look at the two that came up in Notts County and Wrexham, which are huge clubs for the level.

“Also, probably the teams that came up, no disrespect to Carlisle but nobody anticipated Carlisle would be promoted, last year.

“I think everybody probably thought that Stockport would go up and they didn’t and that left Stockport still in this division who for me, are the best team in the league from what I’ve seen, so far.

Gazette:

“I think for all these reasons, this is why League Two is so tough and such a good league and a great league to be involved in."

Cowley insists Colchester must continue to focus on the process in hand ahead of this weekend's clash with Accrington Stanley.

The U’s are now six points above the relegation zone, following Forest Green Rovers’ shock 2-1 win at promotion-chasing Barrow, on Tuesday night.

Colchester were left without a game after their home clash with Grimsby Town was called off due to a waterlogged pitch, with the fixture now rearranged for Tuesday, April 16.

Cowley says he will be paying no attention to other teams’ results, as he strives to lead Colchester up the table.

“For us, we don’t get caught up in result watching," said the U's boss.

“We know what we’ve got to do – I knew what we had to do on day one and it’s no different.

“We have to keep trying to develop and improve as a team, keep staying really process orientated and know that if we keep working on the process - and we’re working relentlessly – the outcome will take care of itself.”

Colchester are aiming to get a valuable win tomorrow against an Accrington side who lie 12th in the League Two table, just two points off the play-off places.
