ARTHUR Read's magnificent winning goal for Colchester United at Morecambe last month has been shortlisted for the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month award for January.

Read struck home an outstanding free-kick to secure the U's a 1-0 win at the Mazuma Stadium and clinch a first victory for the club under head coach Danny Cowley.

It was Read's fifth goal of the season, a strike that boss Cowley likened to one former England star Paul Gascoigne might have scored in his pomp.

Read said afterwards: “I was buzzing with that.

“To be fair, I haven’t practised free-kicks in training for a while – maybe I just won’t practice any more and just leave it to the games!"

Read is up against Wrexham's Paul Mullin for his goal against Barrow, Abraham Odoh of Harrogate Town for his strike against Doncaster Rovers and Walsall's Donovan Daniels, who netted against Sutton United.
