CAMERON McGeehan insisted he wanted to play on and help his side despite suffering a nasty head wound in Colchester United’s win at Morecambe.

The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury in the 75th minute of the U’s 1-0 victory at the Mazuma Stadium, following a clash with Shrimps defender Farrend Rawson.

McGeehan, who has made 23 league and cup appearances for Colchester and scored six goals since joining them last September from Belgian club Oostende, was left with blood pouring from a wound on the back of his head after the challenge.

But he continued with his head heavily strapped until the 88th minute, when he was eventually replaced by John Akinde.

It was a wound that required stitches but Colchester boss Danny Cowley said the former Luton Town midfielder was not concussed and was adamant he wanted to continue, as he played his part in helping the U’s claim their first win of 2024.

Gazette:

Cowley said: “It was a nasty one and he’s going to need some stitches.

“He wanted to play on – he’s got such incredible fight about him.

“Luckily there was no concussion, which is good.”

Riley Harbottle was forced off in Colchester’s win at Morecambe, after making an impressive debut and helping his new team keep a rare clean sheet.

The new U’s loan signing from Hibernian had to be withdrawn in the 72nd minute against the Shrimps but boss Cowley says it was just cramp and nothing more sinister.

“He’s played 12 games this season but they’ve all been at a lower intensity,” added Cowley.

“We knew that after 60 to 70 minutes, we were going to call on Tom Dallison.

Gazette:

“But Tom trained really well all week and I knew that as a consequence of him training well all week and being a good professional, he would pay me back today and I thought he did when he came on.

“I thought he did a good job and we were so pleased to keep that clean sheet.

“I’m not used to my teams conceding two goals in a game and now we only concede three goals in three games.

“We always try to work with less than a goal a game and that’s been our challenge.”
