DANNY Cowley says Colchester United’s requirements in this month’s transfer window are ‘becoming clearer by the day’ as they bid to bolster their squad.

The U’s have already snapped up Conor Wilkinson from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell and are aiming to make further additions, as they bid to move up the League Two table.

Colchester head coach Danny and brother Nicky have been busy assessing the current U’s squad this season, ahead of potential new arrivals.

He said: “We’re working hard.

“It’s becoming clearer by the day as to what the team needs.

“Our ambition is just to try and help the players we already have here.

“I think we’ve got some really, really good players here but we need to try to find the right balance and the right blend to hopefully maximise the players we already have in the building.”

Cowley believes it is a good thing that there is a recruitment team in place at Colchester to deal with incomings and outgoings.

The former Portsmouth and Huddersfield Town boss and his assistant Nicky Cowley are working closely with sporting director Dmitri Halajko and head of recruitment Ross Embleton to bolster their squad, this month.

Gazette:

“I think we have a brilliant recruitment team obviously led by D and Ross,” said Cowley.

“They’ve been working hard for a long period of time.

“For example, Conor Wilkinson arrived a day before me, right at the beginning of the window.

“The planning with regards to recruitment has been going on for a long time.

“Nicky and I always love to be involved in recruitment and I think it’s such an important part of your job.

“I think it ultimately defines your job, maybe as much as 80 per cent of it but Nicky and I don’t have 80 per cent of our time to give just to recruitment and that’s why it’s so important you have a team around you.

“We’ve got so many fantastic people at the club, people like Steve Ball who has lived every single job at this club and knows these levels of football so, so well.

“There are so many people to give input, which I think is really helpful.”
