DANNY Cowley is adamant that the foundations are already in place for Colchester United to achieve success.

Danny and his brother Nicky are preparing to take charge of their first U's home game this weekend, following their appointment as the club's new first-team management team.

New Colchester head coach Danny and assistant Nicky are aiming to chalk up their first win since their arrival last week when the U's host Bradford City at the JobServe Community Stadium, on Saturday.

And Danny is believes the platform is already in place for them to make an impact in North Essex, both in the short and long term.

He said: “Nicky and I have had our success as being part of projects.

“We saw Colchester United and we saw a team and a club that we thought we could really help.

“We’re local boys and we have an affinity with the football club and the local community.

“It’s great for us to be back in Essex; we’ve had a lot of success in Essex.

“I only see opportunity and success for this football club and I have to reiterate, it’s got some really good foundations.

“Of course, we totally understand that ultimately, a football team is judged on first-team performance and that’s an area that we are going to really try to impact both in the short term and in the longer term.

“But there are really good foundations and really good people already in the building that will support and help us to achieve that.”

Colchester will be aiming to build on their 2-2 draw at Swindon Town, last weekend.

The U's came back from two goals down to claim a point at the County Ground, thanks to goals from Matt Jay and Bradley Ihionvien.

“We are where we are because we’ve conceded too many goals and too many soft goals," added Cowley.

“That’s something we have to improve and eradicate because you can play really good football, you can dominate the ball but if you let in soft goals when the ball comes into your box, then you’re not going to win consistently.

“That’s something that we have to work on."
