GRIMSBY Town have confirmed the appointment of David Artell as their new head coach.

The 43-year-old takes charge of the club following the departure of Paul Hurst last month with the Mariners lingering four points above the relegation zone in League Two.

Artell previously managed Crewe for five years, leaving the club in 2022.

Following his appointment, he told the Grimsby website: "It's an exciting time to be part of this football club.

"I've been thoroughly impressed by what (vice-chair) Andrew (Pettit) and (chair) Jason (Stockwood) have said and the plans that they have got going forwards and I think there's a lot of hard work ahead, both on and off the pitch, but it's a challenge that I'm excited about and that I can certainly get on board with.

"I think it's been well documented now that I've turned down a few jobs in League Two, I turned down one last week and I turned down assistant coach at Standard Liege in Belgium before that.

"The key thing is that there's a plan. Jason and Andrew have been absolutely explicit in the detail of where they want this club to go and I went 'that'll do'.

"Quite a lot of other clubs think that I'm the plan and I understand that but, at the same time, it's not just that. I've been mightily impressed by Jason and Andrew and what they have said."

Artell will take charge of his first match when Grimsby travel to MK Dons on Tuesday.

Morecambe have appointed former player Ged Brannan as their new manager following the recent departure of Derek Adams.

Brannan, 51, has signed an 18-month contract after being promoted from first-team coach and senior professional development coach to succeed Adams, who departed to take charge of Ross County earlier this month.

Morecambe said on their official website: "We feel Ged is the perfect appointment to take Morecambe Football Club forward, having seen off a large number of impressive and reputable names during the recruitment process."

Former Shrimps midfielder Brannan added: "I'm absolutely delighted to be in charge of a club like Morecambe.

"The fans are great, I've been here before as a player and I always loved it...I'm absolutely buzzing. I'm just so glad the board have stuck by me and given me this opportunity."

Brannan made more than 60 appearances for Morecambe during a two-year spell as a player until 2007 and held various coaching roles at Accrington before returning to the Shrimps in September.

Adams left Morecambe last week to begin a third spell as Ross County boss after replacing Malky Mackay.

Brannan took temporary charge on Saturday in their 6-0 Sky Bet League Two defeat at Wrexham.
