CAMERON McGeehan admits it is up to Colchester United’s players to turn their flagging form around.

The U’s play their first game under interim boss Matty Etherington tonight when they visit Grimsby Town aiming to halt a run of four successive defeats, a losing run that has seen them drop into the League Two relegation zone.

Colchester will head to Blundell Park without a permanent head coach in charge, following Ben Garner’s dismissal on Saturday night.

However, midfielder McGeehan acknowledges the U’s players must put in the performances to lift them up the table.

McGeehan said: “We’re down the bottom of the table and we’ve got a big week, coming up.

“We’ve got a good group of players and a good way of playing.

“We just need to find that belief and that confidence.

Gazette:

“There’s only one way to do that, we’ve got no other choice and that’s to keep working hard.

“We’ve got a good group of young players in there and the group needs to click and fast and put some results together.

“To be where we are in the table is very disappointing and not where anyone at the football club wants to be.

“It’s still early and we’ve still got plenty of time and plenty of games and it can all change quickly.

“It’s up to us to change it around and we’ve got two really important games.

“Things can change quickly the other way but you have to put performances in every single game because there’s no let up.

“This league is relentless with a game every few days, at the minute.

“The great thing about this league is we have another game on Tuesday to put it right.

Gazette:

“It’s a fickle game and it can change quickly, either way.

“We’re on a poor run at the minute but we can change that around and put some wins together and go on a winning streak.

“It can change very quickly and the league can look a lot better.

“We believe in ourselves but we’re not getting the results and that’s the most important thing.”

Colchester are looking to bounce back at Grimsby tonight following their 2-1 home defeat to Harrogate Town.

The U’s looked like they might be heading for victory after Chay Cooper had put them ahead but Matt Daly and Sam Folarin sealed the visitors’ win.

“We threw it away a bit at the end, which was obviously very hard to take,” added McGeehan.

Gazette:

“We thought we could build on the goal we scored but some sloppy play let them back into the game and we shot ourselves in the foot, so it’s back to the drawing board again.

“It was disappointing we let that lead slip and it was just not good enough, all round.

“We should see the game out and win it and it was a bit naïve from us.

“We should have shut up shop but they end up scoring twice, just after we scored.”
