TONY Humes has left his role as Colchester United's Director of Football.

The 57-year-old has departed after spending nearly 14 years at the JobServe Community Stadium over two spells, where he also served as the club's first-team head coach and Head of Youth.

Humes served as Colchester's Director of Football for more than seven years, having been appointed to the role back in March, 2016.

The former Ipswich Town and Wrexham centre-back was added to the U's board of directors in March, 2017.

Humes played his part in helping the U’s academy youngsters such as Alex Gilbey and Sammie Szmodics flourish prior to taking charge of the club’s senior team in September, 2014.

The former Ipswich Town and Wrexham defender helped Colchester stay in League One in the 2014-15 season following a dramatic final-day win over Preston North End but departed his role in November, 2015 following a poor run of results.

Colchester chairman Robbie Cowling revealed the news in a message to the club's supporters, ahead of the new League Two season.

Mr Cowling told www.cu-fc.com: "Tony Humes has parted with the club and has declined my offer to remain as a non-executive director.

"I want to express my immense gratitude to Tony for his valuable contributions to Colchester United and wish him all of the best for the future.

"Tony played a crucial role in the establishment of the club's Cat Two Academy and greatly influenced the careers of players like Sammie Szmodics and Frankie Kent.

"As the first team coach, he promoted an attractive style of football and was fearless in giving opportunities to young players, regardless of the magnitude or significance of the game.

"And as a Director, Tony helped to steer the club through the pandemic and the difficult period that followed."

Mr Cowling has also announced that Steve Ball has taken over as Colchester's new Head of Coaching for the academy.

"Your unwavering support has been truly remarkable, and I am thrilled to announce that we have sold approximately 15 per cent more season tickets compared to last season, with sales still ongoing."
