FORMER Colchester United defender Omar Sowunmi has joined Sutton United.

The 6ft 6in defender has linked up with the South London side, after leaving National League side Bromley.

Sutton manager Matt Gray told the club's website: ''Omar's had a great couple of seasons with Bromley and nearly won promotion with them last season.

"He's got huge defensive qualities and is another player in the prime of his career, and will be good competition for Ben Goodliffe and Louis John.''

After starting his career at Ipswich Town and play for Yeovil Town between 2015 and 2019, Sowunmi linked up with Colchester.

But the defender found his appearances few and far between during his time at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Sowunmi made 13 league starts for the U's during his two seasons at the club - and 30 appearances in all competitions in total.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a productive two years playing under former U's goalkeeper Andy Woodman at Bromley, where he was a regular member of the squad that reached the National League play-offs last season.

He was voted Players' Player of the Year and Manager's Player of the Year, scoring eight goals in 38 games and also featured in Bromley's 2022 FA Trophy success.

Sowunmi is now looking forward to a new challenge back in the EFL with Sutton.
