COLCHESTER’S mayor and mayoress made it through to the finals of a popular TV gameshow as they strived to be Pointless.

Tim Young and his wife, Nicola, appeared on Wednesday and tonight’s episodes of BBC One’s Pointless in which competitors try to find the most obscure - or pointless - answers.

After two shows, they won the coveted Pointless trophy... but did not win the jackpot after failing to find a pointless answer in the final.

When introducing themselves, presenter Alexander Armstrong was particularly impressed by Mr Young’s badge of office for Colchester, which he wore on the day.

He also admired Ms Goodchild’s chain, particularly the image with Boudicca on it and each of the previous mayoresses being named on the chain’s extensions.

Gazette:

Filming for the shows took place last September with Mr Young saying he was just “four months” into his tenure at the time.

Colchester’s deputy mayor John Jowers was also involved in a joke on the show.

Mr Young was asked if he knew who was “snapping at his heels” by Mr Armstrong, to which he jested: “My deputy, I have to keep him in order.”

In the first show, Mr Young and Ms Goodchild started strongly but faltered in the second round answering questions on world geography.

However, they were back for the second time tonight with Mr Young finding a pointless answer - and getting one wrong. However, they got through all the rounds to make it to the final.

They took on the category of Girls on Film, but did not find the elusive pointless answer which would give them the money which would have gone to the mayor's charities.

Mr Young had no regrets, however. He said: “I’ve loved Pointless for years, and if I’m not busy, I’ll watch it.

“Nicky applied and we were fortunate enough to get through, we were lucky enough to have the extra ingredient of being mayor and mayoress.

“I am glad they appreciated and zoomed in on the bling, they asked us to wear it when we applied.

“It was a wonderful experience and really a dream come true as a Pointless fan.

“Both Alexander Armstrong and Rose Matafeo were really welcoming and friendly, and hopefully we’ve given Colchester a bit more of a profile.

“I have desired a Pointless trophy since I started watching the show, so it is a dream come true and the trophy now has its pride of place.”

Mr Young is standing for the Greenstead ward in the upcoming local elections. The other candidates are: David Cress (Con), Lisa Cross (Green), Chantelle-Louise Whyborn (Lib Dem), Kevin Blair (Reform UK).
