COLCHESTER’S mayor and mayoress racked their brains together for a strong showing on a popular TV gameshow.

Tim Young and wife Nicola appeared on tonight’s episode of BBC One’s Pointless.

The pair were couple number two on the show, which was once again hosted by Alexander Armstrong and Rose Matafeo.

It is not the first time the pair have appeared on a quiz show.

Tim Young took on Nicola during BBC Radio 2 presenter Michael Ball’s On The Ball quiz last year.

When introducing themselves, Mr Armstrong was particularly mesmerised by Mr Young’s badge of office for Colchester which he wore on the day.

Similar reactions were given to the mayoress’ chain worn by Nicola, particularly the image with Boudica on it and each of the previous mayoresses being named on the chain’s extensions.

The shoot was about last September, with Tim saying he was just “four months” into his tenure at the time.

Colchester’s deputy mayor Councillor John Jowers was also involved in a small joke on the show.

Mr Young was asked if he knew who was “snapping at his heels” by Mr Armstrong, to which he jested, “yes, my deputy, I have to keep him in order”.

In the first round, the pair started very strongly.

The category required contestants to name someone from the 19th century using the clues and initials given.

The mayor up first, chose to name the “Polish-French scientist who became first person to win two Nobel prizes” as Marie Curie, which scored 30, the lowest score of that pass.

By the time it came round to Nicola, both were already through, however, she went on to score the best score of anyone, naming the “author and activist who inspired the 1962 film the miracle worker” as Helen Keller.

Scoring just seven, they soared through with just 37, the combined lowest score of the round.

Next up in round two was World Geography, which was sadly to be the duo’s undoing.

With the category of any capital city which ends in a vowel, Nicola was up first choosing Oslo, with just 22.

Tim debated a few answers, eventually choosing Latvia capital Riga, for just two points.

However, despite only scoring 24, they were eliminated due to everyone else in the round scoring a pointless answer.

Tim and Nicola will be back on the show tomorrow, Thursday, April 19, with teams typically returning to the programme until they have either reached the final once or been eliminated in three consecutive episodes.

Tim is once again standing for the Greenstead ward in the upcoming local elections.

The other candidates are:

David Cress (Con)

Lisa Cross (Green)

Chantelle-Louise Whyborn (Lib Dem)

Kevin Blair (Reform UK)
