COLCHESTER United have received a welcome boost after striker Kwesi Appiah stepped up his rehabilitation - at his parent club Crawley Town.

Appiah, who is on a season-long loan from the Red Devils, has missed the U's last eight matches in all competitions with a hamstring injury, which resulted in him undergoing a scan.

Colchester have badly missed the 32-year-old striker, who scored two in two games under Matt Bloomfield prior to suffering the injury.

The Ghana international is on the road to recovery and linked up with his employers and the U's divisional rivals Crawley in a training session on Monday, as he attempts to get back to fitness.

Colchester will be hoping they have Appiah back in their ranks sooner rather than later, as they bid to move up the League Two table.

Meanwhile, Emyr Huws could be in line to return to the Colchester squad for their home game against Doncaster Rovers, this weekend.

The 28-year-old midfielder played for the U's under-21s against Millwall last week, after making a welcome return from a serious ankle injury.

Huws played for nearly an hour in the Professional Development League game, been sidelined after rupturing ligaments in his side's friendly against the Lions, in July.

Colchester head coach Matt Bloomfield said: “Ems is a real top footballer.

“It’s been such a shame that he’s suffered with this injury and we haven’t seen him on the pitch in my time here yet.

“But we’re looking forward to having him back.

“He got 55 minutes for the under-21s on Tuesday afternoon.

“He’s a fantastic footballer and we’re really pleased that he’s back and rolling."
