A SHOPKEEPER has hit out at a driver who drove off after crashing into his store.
The HGV was turning out of Short Wyre Street into Queen Street in Colchester’s city centre when he hit the shop.
Queen Street Continental Supermarket, in the former Premier site, sustained damage to the side of its premises during the accident on Wednesday.
Shopkeeper Shwan Alsulayman told the Gazette he is unsure how much he will have to fork out to fund the repairs.
“A delivery lorry came out of Short Wyre Street and hit the side of our shop,” said Mr Alsulayman.
“It is really bad from the driver to do a hit and run, leaving damage on the property.
“There are too many accidents in Colchester where properties are hit by big trucks.
“I am sure I will need to change some of the wood now.”
The shopkeeper called for the police to take action and help him locate the person behind the incident.

In 2015, a lorry driver bumped into popular pub the Purple Dog when they failed to judge a tight corner turning from Trinity Street into Eld Lane.
And more recently, lorry drivers have become stuck in comical fashion in Colchester’s Dutch Quarter due to a perfect storm of sat-nav confusion and “lack of common sense”.
The latest incident has led Castle ward councillor Mark Goacher to call for an awareness among drivers that the city’s streets are narrow and notoriously tough to navigate.
“There is an issue with the size of some of these vehicles going down very narrow streets,” said the councillor.
“I am surprised to hear this is happening in Queen Street too. It’s concerning as a lot of pedestrians walk down there and I wonder if the lorry mounted a pavement.
“Obviously we have to be reasonable and access must continue as businesses need stuff delivered.
“But, it does sound like a lot of these incidents are a lack of common sense.
“In this instance, the driver needs to take some responsibility and own up.”
