THOSE troublesome threepoint turns can be hard to perfect – not least when you’re driving a 32ft lorry.

This driver found that out when turning from Trinity Street into Eld Lane, in Colchester.

Eyewitnesses say about 20 people stopped to watch as the scenes unfolded.

During the series of tight turns, the lorry bumped into popular town centre pub, the Purple Dog, damaging the listed building’s eaves as well as an over-hanging wall outside jewellers, Argent d’Or.

Neither were seriously damaged, but the driver did not stop and instead continued on towards Head Street.

Theresa Higgins, Colchester mayor and councillor for New Town, said: “I could see the driver was trying to manoeuvre in order to be able to drive up Eld Lane.

“It took about three or four three-point turn attempts.

“We were surprised it did not hit Baccus clothing shop opposite Argent d’Or.”

The incident happened shortly before 10am on Tuesday.

She added: “There were about 20 of us watching, but the driver didn’t stop at all.

“To be fair, it is possible he didn’t know he actually hit something.”

There are two signs in Trinity Street warning drivers that vehicles measuring more than 30ft 6ins should not use the road.

Bosses at lorry firm Meyer Timber have told Colchester Council officials their trucks are 32ft long.

Although the driver did not stop, it is understood the company has since contacted the Purple Dog.

Mrs Higgins added: “Many lorries rely on Sat Navs these days, but because of them, our town does get damaged.”

Staff at the Purple Dog confirmed it sustained some damage, but added it was not serious.

A spokesman added: “It’s fine.

“It happens all the time.”
