COLCHESTER United made it through to the Carabao Cup second round for the first time since 2019 after beating Ipswich Town last night.

The U's impressive 1-0 triumph at Portman Road helped them make progress in the competition and book their place in tonight's draw.

Colchester will be hoping to emulate - or better - their excellent run in the competition in the 2019-20 campaign, under John McGreal.

The U's beat Premier League sides Spurs and Crystal Palace and also knocked out Swindon Town and Crawley Town, before losing 3-0 to Manchester United in the quarter-final.

The second-round draw takes place tonight and will be shown live on Sky Sports - with Colchester ball number six.

It will take place following the televised game between Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland, which kicks off at 7.45pm.

Gazette:

The draw will be hosted by Sky's new Carabao Cup presenter Mark Chapman, with former Colchester striker Clinton Morrison and ex-Sunderland favourite Michael Gray selecting the ties.

The draw remains regionalised and like the first round, will again be split into southern and northern sections.

The 13 Premier League clubs not involved in European competitions will enter at this stage, alongside Championship sides Burnley and Watford.

A total of 11 Championship sides were knocked out of the competition last night, nine by lower league opposition.

The teams that will be added to the competition at the second-round stage are: Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Leeds, Leicester, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Watford, Wolves.

The teams that Colchester could face in the southern section of the second round are: Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion, Cambridge United, Charlton Athletic, Crawley Town, Crystal Palace, Exeter City, Forest Green Rovers, Fulham, Gillingham, MK Dons, Newport County, Norwich City, Oxford United, Portsmouth, Southampton, Stevenage, Walsall, Watford, Wycombe Wanderers, Coventry City or Bristol City, Plymouth Argyle or Peterborough United.

Second-round ties are due to be played during the week beginning August 22.
