ALEX Newby says he already feels right at home at Colchester United.

But the U’s summer signing admits he had to overcome a self-confessed ‘awkward’ moment as he started life at his brand new club.

Newby has been featuring for Colchester in their pre-season friendlies, after joining them from League Two rivals Rochdale last month.

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder says he is enjoying his first few weeks at the U’s – but revealed he experienced a somewhat toe-curling moment when he very first joined.

Newby said: “It’s early days but I think I’ve settled in pretty well.

“The lads are all brilliant and that obviously helps, to have a group in the changing room to welcome you like they have.

“Time will tell but at the moment, I’m really enjoying the challenge.

“This is the first place that I’ve been where I don’t know anybody.

“The first day I walked in, I was told to go to the changing rooms and all of the lads were in there, at the same time!

“I walked in and introduced myself but it was an awkward start really, as I was hoping I could ease my way in!

“It’s a new experience and that’s what you look for in life really.

“It’s been a bit stressful over the summer, to be honest – it’s the not knowing what you’re doing really that’s the main thing.

“I was just delighted to get it signed and sorted and get back to what I do really.

“I just want to get playing in front of the fans and introduce myself to them.

“The fit here just seemed perfect for me really, other than location!

“But it’s a new challenge to come here out of my comfort zone and develop as a person and as a player.”

Newby joined Colchester on a two-year deal last month, after leaving Rochdale.

The former Bolton Wanderers youngster made 82 appearances across two seasons for the Dale, scoring 13 times.

Gazette:

He played against the U's twice last season, with both games finishing up as 1-1 draws.

Newby said: “I was keeping an eye on the results last season when the gaffer (Wayne Brown) came in as interim, as it was then.

“Hopefully, I can just help out and improve the team – that’s what I’ll be looking to do.

“It’s an exciting time, at the start of the season, with all of the hope and I’m excited just to get playing games.

“I just want to make an impact on the pitch.

“I didn’t play the last few games of the season at Rochdale and I just felt like the manager and the staff here really valued me.

“I felt wanted as a player and for me, that’s the main thing.

“I feel like I can fit into this system really well and thrive in it."
