A TALENTED young girl has made the finals of a national song-writing competition after penning a track inspired by her mum’s lockdown battle.

Georgia Taylor, who is 11-years-old and attends Littlegarth School in Nayland, has been named as a finalist in the Song Academy’s Young Songwriter contest.

The music maestro, whose favourite artist is Adele, was shortlisted for the top prize in the eight to 12-year-old category after submitting her track Miracle.

After fending off competition from more than 850 other entries, Georgia’s record will now be judged and meticulously marked by the likes of Tom Odell and Tom Grennan.

She said: “Listening to the other finalists, there are some incredible songs and talent and I can’t believe I’m mixing with talent like that.

“Also knowing that top artists are on the judging panel and have liked my song enough gives me a huge confidence boost – I feel excited and also very lucky.”

Georgia has been experimenting with writing music and lyrics every day since the age of seven, when her parents Daniel and Cressida bought her a digital piano.

Prior to that, however, from as young as four, she would constantly and proudly sing around the house, flexing her vocal tones and finding her voice.

Nowadays Georgia jots her ideas down in her musical writing journal before revealing them to the wider world, and inspiration can come from all sorts of sources.

Miracle, for example, is about the vulnerability of her mum and the health challenges she faced during the lockdowns.

Shortly before the Covid crisis hit, Cressida was diagnosed with a rare form of arthritis which meant she could hardly more and could potentially die if she caught coronavirus.

Thankfully, Cressida has now recovered about 80 per cent of her mobility but will still have to manage a suppressed immune system for the rest of her life

Dad Daniel added: “Georgia prayed every day and believes that someone was looking down, saw we were struggling and protected her mum.

“Bad day or good day, she is straight on the piano and it helps her understand and process her emotions.

“Having the confidence at 11 to put yourself out there to feedback and critique takes courage with something so personal, but she determined to be a songwriter.”
