FORMER Colchester United favourite Johnnie Jackson has left his role as Charlton Athletic manager.

The ex-U's midfielder, who made more than 100 league appearances for Colchester between 2006 and 2009, was appointed as the Addicks permanent boss following a successful temporary spell, last December.

Jackson was appointed on contract renewal at the end of the campaign dependent on results and now the League One side have made the 'very difficult decision' to part company with the former Spurs midfielder.

Sandgaard told the club's website: "I would like to thank Johnnie for everything he has done for the club.

"He is a Charlton legend who has given his all for this club as a player, captain, coach, assistant manager and manager.

"I am grateful for all he has contributed during my time at Charlton, including stabilising us this season when he took over as manager, following our poor start to the campaign.

"This decision has been a very difficult one to make, Johnnie has done so much for the club, but I felt the time was right to make the change as we continue our preparations for next season."

Jackson, who played in the Championship for Colchester and was their player of the year in the 2007-08 season, had led Charlton to three wins in their last five league games in League One.

Charlton, who were beaten 4-0 at Ipswich Town in their final game of the season last weekend, finished 13th in the table.

The 39-year-old made the most successful start by any manager in the club's history.

Charlton were mired in the relegation zone when Jackson was appointed on a temporary basis, immediately sparking the revival by leading them to a 1-0 win at Sunderland in his first match in charge.

Jackson made 279 appearances and scored 55 league goals during his playing days with Charlton.

Former U's midfielder Alex Gilbey is also currently plying his trade with the Addicks.
