CARLISLE United boss Keith Millen felt his side's 2-2 draw at Colchester United was a fair outcome.

The U's shared the spoils with the Cumbrians, leaving both clubs situated just above the League Two drop zone.

The draw ended a run of four successive defeats for the Cumbrians, who remain two points above the relegation zone.

Millen said: "Colchester used the conditions well.

"They played forward, turned us, put us under pressure purely by long balls really.

"Neither team got the ball down and played much.

"That had a big impact on the game and I felt at half-time, we saw that through.

"I was hoping that we'd go on and become the stronger team and I felt we did that, at times.

"But when you've not won for four games and you've had four defeats, you're going to get nervous.

Gazette:

"It's a start.

"We've stopped the run of defeats and we've scored two goals, which is positive and we know also that we've got a lot of work to do.

"We're a team that's been on a bad run and lost five or six players to injury, with new players coming in.

"We're a team in transition and that's not easy, when you're not playing well.

"I thought both teams competed pretty equally really and it was probably a fair result, at the end of the day."

It looked as though Colchester might be on their way to a vital victory, after goals from Tommy Smith and substitute Tyreik Wright had cancelled out Omari Patrick's fine opener for the visitors.

But Tobi Sho-Silva's 86th-minute header denied Colchester victory, as the game ended in a draw.

“Both teams realised the importance of the game and you could sense a nervousness," added Millen.

Gazette:

“There was a lack of quality from both teams so it was a case of trying to make the most of the conditions.

“In the first half, we got penned in at times mainly because of the wind but in the second half, when we got forward we looked dangerous.

“Omari (Patrick) scored a great goal for us to go 1-0 up and we wanted to be solid and try and see the game out a little bit and we’ve conceded two poor goals we need to look at.

"You want to try and stay in the game when you go 1-0 up for a little while.

"But we couldn't and you could see that all of a sudden, we dropped deeper and became a little bit more nervous, which you expect.

"When you look at the back players, they're young players so we've got to support them and we have a week's training now where we can try and get better.

“The spirit was there and they kept going with a little bit of quality with Joe’s (Riley’s) cross and Tobi (Sho-Silva).

Gazette:

“To be fair to him, he had a bit of blurred vision so I don’t know what ball he headed but luckily, it was the right one!

"He didn't feel great and we were going to take him off, so it's great that he scored.

"So all in all, pleased with the commitment from the group.

"When you look at the team, we've been become very young because of circumstances.

"We're a very young side with not a lot of experience, so you're going to get mistakes and errors but I thought they showed a lot of commitment."
