JAKE Turner has played his last game on loan for Colchester United.

Writing on social media, the Newcastle United goalkeeper confirmed his return to his parent club.

Turner wrote: "I want to say a big thank you to everyone at Colchester, the fans, the staff and all the players for making me feel welcome.

"It's not the way I wanted to end my time here but I would like to wish you all the best moving forward."

Gazette:

Colchester last week said they had retained Turner's services until at least the end of January.

And the U's were said to be in discussions with his parent club Newcastle about keeping the goalkeeper at the JobServe Community Stadium for longer.

U's director of Football Tony Humes told WWW.CU-FC.COM: "Jake's done extremely well for us and we are all disappointed he's not staying longer.

"We were working with Newcastle to extend it further until the end of the season, but they refused to work with us on it and Jake has had to head back up there.

"We'd like to thank Jake for his contribution and hard work here over the past few months and wish him all the best in his future football career, which we're sure will be bright."

Turner has made 14 league and cup appearances for Colchester this season following his loan move from Newcastle, last summer.

He initially had to wait patiently for his chance to shine in their first team.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper got his opportunity, following Shamal George's rib injury against Stevenage, last November.

Since coming on in that game at the Lamex Stadium, he has started Colchester's last 13 games, in all competitions.

The former Morecambe shot-stopper is yet to play a senior competitive game for the Magpies after signing for them from Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2019.

George is on the way back from injury and took part in warm-up drills prior to Colchester's 3-2 defeat at Sutton United, last night.
