SHAWN McCoulsky is hoping the goals start rolling in after scoring on his Colchester United debut.

The 24-year-old, who joined the U's on a short-term deal last month, netted on his first appearance for the U's in their FA Cup triumph at AFC Sudbury.

McCoulsky came off the bench to score Colchester's fourth goal in their 4-0 victory, in the televised first-round clash.

And after wasting no time in getting off the mark for his new club, the striker is now setting his sights on more goals.

McCoulsky said: "As a striker, when you join a new club all you want to do is score on your debut.

"I'm very happy to get that out of the way and hopefully they start rolling in now.

"I'm a striker and I like to score goals.

"I hope that I can bring that to the team and help the team win games.

"Whether I start on the bench or if I'm in the first XI, I'm not too worried as long as I help the team as much as possible.

"Hopefully we can do that in the league now, kick on and push up the table."

McCoulsky appeared as a 73rd-minute substitute in Colchester's win at AFC Sudbury, coming off the bench for Freddie Sears.

The former Forest Green Rovers striker was happy to help his new club seal their passage into the second round for the first time since 2015.

"It was good to win and score four goals," said McCoulsky.

"All of the goals that we scored were top drawer, especially on that surface where it isn't easy to get goals like that.

"It was hostile and the fans were all behind them - they were a 12th man for them.

"It isn't a surface we play on every week, so we definitely had to adapt to it.

"We trained on a 3G pitch before the game just to get used to it.

"It's nothing that we see every week, so we're just happy that we adapted to it and got the win, in the end."

McCoulsky already has history in the FA Cup, having netted Newport County's late winner in their shock win over Leeds United, in 2018.

He is now looking forward to the second-round draw, which takes place tonight on ITV4 following the Dagenham and Redbridge v Salford City match.

McCoulsky added: "Hopefully we'll get one of the big boys in the next round, it'll be good for the club and we can progress.

"One of the best goals I've scored in my career was for Newport against Leeds, in the FA Cup.

"It was quite a late goal, the same as this one (AFC Sudbury). "I do like scoring in the FA Cup and it's definitely a competition I like to play in."
