A SPORTS-FASHION retailer’s new town centre store “smashed” its first day of trading after opening within a shopping complex.
JD Sports has spent the last few months refitting a large premises in the Lion Walk Shopping Centre and finally welcomed its first customers on Saturday.
Occupying the units which were previously home to Topshop and Topman, the self-dubbed King of Trainers’ new shop will stock brands such as Nike and Adidas.
The clothing and trainer company already has a store in the town’s Culver Square Shopping Centre, although this site is believed to be much larger.
Speaking about the launch a spokesman for JD Sports said: “We are delighted to open a second JD store in Colchester - the store smashed all opening targets.”
“This will offer our shoppers a wider selection from our extensive range of the best sports fashion wear.”
Courtney Fowler, store manager at the new JD Sports, said: “It has been an incredible opening weekend with fantastic sales and the store has been full.
“We are predicting a really busy run-up to Christmas and we are really enjoying our new home at Lion Walk - it clearly has been a really great move.”

The official launch was overseen by Lion Walk Shopping Centre manager Martin Leatherdale, who is also a councillor for Lexden and Braiswick.
He added: “It was a pleasure to open Colchester’s newest flagship proposition - it is a phenomenal addition to Lion Walk and they had a great opening day.
“This is a huge vote of confidence for Colchester and Lion Walk and it is fantastic they have smashed their sales – it shows businesses can thrive in Colchester.
“I am really looking forward to the journey ahead and to JD Sports opening until 9pm on November 17 for the Christmas lights switch-on.
“It is fantastic that new stores like this are choosing to open in Colchester despite the coronavirus pandemic and the current climate.
JD Sports’ Lion Walk Shopping Centre site will be open from 9am until 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am until 4.30pm on Sundays.
