TRANMERE Rovers have 'strongly condemned' the incident that saw a bottle allegedly thrown at a coach full of Colchester United supporters following their League Two match, on Friday night.

The incident happened soon after the U's 2-0 defeat at Prenton Park, as the coach was getting ready to leave for the long journey back to Essex.

A bottle was allegedly thrown at the vehicle and hit the emergency glass window, shattering the outer pane but fortunately, no-one was injured.

A statement from Tranmere Rovers said: “We are aware of an incident which allegedly occurred after last night’s game and the Club strongly condemns this type of behaviour.

“Occurrences like this are thankfully quite rare at Prenton Park and the actions of a small minority does not reflect on our fantastic fan base.

“We will support the police with their ongoing investigations.”

Colchester United Supporters Association (CUSA) said it was lucky no-one was hurt, following the incident.

Writing on Twitter, they said: 'Putting the disappointment of another poor U’s result aside for a moment, I hope the police catch the Tranmere fans who threw a bottle at the coach as we were about to leave.

'A hostile and pathetic minority but a poor reflection on their club. Luckily no one was hurt, luckily only the outer pane of glass was shattered so luckily we are on our way home. Totally unprovoked. It could have been so much worse.

'A big thank you to our two @RomanCoaches drivers last night, Andy and Steve. Again, very lucky that no one was seriously hurt by the idiot(s), but of course the financial hit suffered by the company will be damaging.'

CUFC Police, who were on duty at the U's match at Tranmere, say they will be working to identify who was responsible.

Writing on Twitter, CUFC Police said: 'Will work with @MerPolTranmere to do everything we can to identify those responsible.

'Glad everyone is ok and I hope the rest of your journey is a safe one.'

Tranmere Rovers Matchday Police Officers have said the behaviour was unacceptbale and are appealing for information.

MerPolTranmere said: 'Great result last night ⁦‪@TranmereRovers‬⁩ tarnished by a small group of youths who damaged the ⁦‪@ColU_Official‬⁩ fans coach smashing the window.

'This is not acceptable and puts a poor light on the #SWA fans and the club anyone has any info then please get in touch.'‬⁩
