THIS slice of nostalgia has come courtesy of former Colchestrian Michael Bennett, who now lives in New Zealand.
The images show Colchester Boys’ High School in Wellesley Road where Mr Bennett was a boarder from 1949.
At the time the headmaster was Harold Wells, a nephew of the author H G Wells.

Mr Bennett said: “Mr Wells was a good chess player and after evening meals we would all go to a room where some played chess and some played ‘Newfooty’, a tabletop game of football.”
“Some of us took the name of a football club and I was Sunderland. As a result, although I have never even been to Sunderland, I have been an ardent supporter of that team.”
I only recently discovered my last report before my family moved to New Zealand, when my father was on loan to the Royal New Zealand Navy for three years.”

When, after three years Mr Bennett’s father’s commission ended, the family stayed in the country.

Colchester Boys’ High School is today the home of Colchester High School.
It was founded in 1882 as an establishment for young ladies before it expanded to allow boys, then over the next 20 years became an all-boys’ school.
Girls were reintroduced to the school in 2006.
