No new date has yet been announced for the fixture, which had been due to be played at the JobServe Community Stadium.
It means that Colchester will now have a free weekend, without a match.
The U's next clash is their Papa John's Trophy group opener at home to League One side Gillingham, next Tuesday night.
The EFL will investigate the circumstances surrounding the postponement.
Sutton supporters who have bought tickets should retain them as they will be valid for the rearranged fixture.
