FORMER Colchester United defender Omar Sowunmi has signed for National League outfit Bromley.

The 25-year-old, who was one of a number of players to be released by the U's at the end of last season, has signed for the Ravens following a successful trial period.

Sowunmi joins Bromley following a successful pre-season with the club and will play under former U's goalkeeper Andy Woodman, who is boss at Hayes Lane.

He also becomes a team-mate of another former U's keeper, Mark Cousins.

Colchester-born Sowunmi told the Bromley website: “I’m very happy to have signed with Bromley and start the journey with the team.

“I’ve been here near enough all of pre-season and really gelled with the staff and all the boys.

“It’s been great to be playing in front of the fans and I can’t wait to keep the good results coming in week in and week out!”

After starting his career at Ipswich Town and play for Yeovil Town between 2015 and 2019, Sowunmi linked up with Colchester.

But the defender found his appearances few and far between during his time at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Sowunmi made 13 league starts for the U's during his two seasons at the club - and 30 appearances in all competitions in total.

Now the 6ft 6in centre-back is looking forward to a fresh challenge with Bromley, who start their new National League season on Saturday.

Ravens boss Andy Woodman told the Bromley website: “Omar is a player we’ve had all pre-season, but we weren’t sure if we were going to be able to get him to stay.

“However, he’s been impressed with what he’s seen, he sees what we’re trying to do and he wants to be a part of what we’re trying to create here.

“I think with the way we’re trying to play football, Omar is going to be a really good addition to our defensive unit and in the opposite box too. I’m delighted to have him on board!”
