KWAME Poku has revealed he suffered from Covid-19 prior to leaving Colchester United and signing for Peterborough United.

The 19-year-old today put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Championship new boys, after joining them from the U's for an undisclosed substantial 'six-figure fee'.

Poku has revealed contracted Covid during pre-season, causing him to self isolate and miss Colchester's pre-season friendlies against Gillingham, Ipswich and Wealdstone.

But the Ghana international has now recovered and is in line to make his Championship debut for Posh against Luton Town, on Saturday.

Poku told the Peterborough United website: “I am really happy to be here.

"It has taken a little while because I have actually had Covid but it is all good. Things like that can happen.

"I am really looking forward to getting started. This club have shown that they can develop younger players and I am excited to get going.

“I really enjoyed my time at Colchester, there were ups and downs, but that is football.

"I wish them nothing but the best for the future.

"I like to express myself as a footballer, try and create and score goals and enjoy it, that is the main thing.”

Poku made 50 league starts for Colchester since making his senior debut for them in September, 2019.

In total, he made 75 league and cup appearances for the U's after making his senior debut for them in a Football League Trophy match at Gillingham.

Poku will link up with former U's trio Sammie Szmodics, Frankie Kent and Jack Marriott at Posh, as Darren Ferguson looks to make them a force in the second tier following their promotion from League One, last season.

Ferguson told the Posh website: “I am really excited about this signing.

"He is a young player that I have watched for the last 18 months, we enquired last season to Colchester when we played them, he didn’t feature that day in that friendly, we have monitored his progress.

“He had a bit of a stop-start season last year, which can happen with young ones.

"He can play as a ten, he can play wide right or even wide left at a push, he is a talented boy and I believe he has real potential.

"It is a really good signing for the football club.”
