COLCHESTER Council’s former leading Lib Dem and Labour coalition have agreed to work together officially in opposition, announcing the new shadow cabinet.

The progressive alliance was turfed out after 13 years when the Conservatives agreed a deal with the Highwoods Independent Group, who had previously been part of the progressive alliance.

The new administration holds a slim majority of one seat.

A fresh progressive agreement has now been formed for the Lib Dems, who have12 seats, and Labour with 11 seats, to work together in opposition.

The shadow cabinet will be:

  • Shadow to leader - Mark Cory (Lib Dem)
  • Shadow deputy leader and resources - David King (Lib Dem)
  • Shadow communities - Mike Lilley (Lab)
  • Shadow environment and sustainability - Martin Goss (Lib Dem)
  • Shadow economy, business and heritage - Julie Young (Lab)
  • Shadow housing and planning - Adam Fox (Lab)

Deputies will also be appointed whilst Mr Cory and Tina Bourne (Lab) will lead the scrutiny committee.

Group leaders Mr Goss and Mr Fox said in a joint statement: ‘We are committed to progressive politics, open, transparent and inclusive, dedicated to the needs of the most vulnerable in our society.

“We are proud that we have looked after so many through the pandemic, that together we have delivered great services, cost effectively, and helped save many businesses and jobs.

“We leave behind great plans, for the town deal and help to the most in need, for a Youth Zone that will transform the lives of thousands and a great record on the environment.

“We will be a robust but fair-minded opposition that will do all we can to avoid this being put at risk by a new administration.”
