I was surprised to read the response of Mark Cory, leader of Colchester Council, in finding out the Independents had decided to join a coalition council with the Conservatives, he obviously assumed incorrectly he would carry on being leader of the existing coalition council (Gazette, May 12, “‘Getting in bed with Blues...’”).

Talk about sour grapes, how he could expect the Independent councillors to support the Labour-Liberal Democrat coalition when they withdrew from this as they could not support some of the decisions made, including forcing through the Alumno project not wanted by the majority of residents.

To say he would hold the new ruling council to account beggars belief when the Labour-Lib Dem alliance has over the past years wasted thousands on the failed garden communities, forced the unwanted Alumno project through, left Colchester without a bus station, just glorified bus stops where buses block the road at times due to nowhere to park, installed new bus stops without numbers on them, just letters that mean nothing, especially to visitors to the town, etc etc.

Hopefully the new ruling council will address these issues, especially the Alumno project if it is not too late, which it may not be if Essex County Council refuses to lift the covenant.

I look forward to the new council’s ideas - hopefully to include the rejuvenation of the town centre, market, highlight the importance of our history and stop wasting taxpayers’ money on unwanted projects.
