A NEW app set up to warn people when they’re entering high crime zones shows the most dangerous places to walk in Colchester.

“WalkSafe” allows users to look across an area and see how many crimes have been committed, the type of crime and how long ago it was reported.

Walksafe is design to help users feel more safe travelling on foot in their area and warn them of areas they may want to avoid.

It uses a map to visualise serious crime reports as icons.

On the app there are different keys for different crimes.

The keys work as follows:

  • Red: Violence/sexual assault
  • Black: knife crime
  • Light blue: feeling unsafe
  • Yellow: mugging

The map is compiled using figures released each month by Police.UK.

An algorithm cycles through the most recent month of police data, refreshing the map twice per week.

The app reveal the most common crimes reported in Colchester are violent and sexual assaults and knife crime.
