Tony Clish, director of Park Holidays UK, said the new facility, which cost around £1.2 million, was a big upgrade on the one the holiday had when the firm took over the site 18 months ago.

"We had a fantastic opportunity to create a new complex from scratch with a bright and airy feel, and using modern environmentally-friendly materials," he said.

"Our team at the park are very excited that we will now be able to offer guests and holiday home owners one of the Essex coast's most sophisticated facilities to relax and enjoy their stay.

"Interest in holiday home ownership at West Mersea Holiday Park is well ahead of expectations this year, and we have ordered several new luxury lodges to satisfy an increasing demand for the most top-end models, so we're looking forward to keeping really busy."
