DOZENS of trees planted to boost biodiversity at a popular beauty spot were ripped up by vandals.

About 100 young saplings, which had been planted as part of Colchester Council’s Woodland and Biodiversity project, were found ripped up and discarded at Spring Lane Park, Lexden.

The vandals pulled the trees out of their protective canes and guards, giving the impression they were still in the ground.

But eagled-eyed residents spotted the trees had been removed and reported the vandalism to Colchester Council.

David King, councillor responsible for business and resources, said: “Many thanks to residents who reported the damage and did their best to help tidy up and for their good wishes.

“Like us they were sad to see so much malicious damage.”

The Colchester Woodland and Biodiversity, which launched in 2019, will see 200,000 trees planted across the borough over the coming years.

It also includes project such as the rewilding of verges to encourage wildflower growth.

Community planting events were held at Spring Lane Park and other venues when Covid rules allowed.

Some campaigners had raised concerns there had not been enough consultation before the trees were laid, but Mr King said residents had been generally supportive.

“Over 28,000 trees have been planted so far and we have gained supporters, volunteers and new ideas,” he said.

“Now we look to support across the borough, wilding and biodiversity, wildflower planting and no mow areas to help insects and pollination.

“Our vision now is to strike with partners and communities a new and better and greener balance.

“To keep the best of what we have but with more trees, wildflowers, nature corridors and places to walk.”

He added: “This damage will not stop that work.

“Community planting has been a joy to do and share and we look forward to more when lock down ends.”

Essex Police have been made aware of the vandalism and Colchester Council’s wardens will be stepping up patrols in the area.
