I read with dismay last week’s article prompted by Sir Bob Russell (Gazette, February 18, “‘Ditch unlawful unnecessary cycle lanes’).

The merits of the cycle lanes in North Station Road may well be dubious and possibly illegal.

However, my disappointment was with Sir Bob failing to suggest a better alternative.

The article did offer a balanced view by virtue of a laudable explanation from Kevin Bentley of the need to “make Colchester a safer, greener and healthier place”.

Whether you are pro or anti cycling, there is no doubt that increased cycling does have the potential to reduce the number of local journeys made by car.

The current problem in Colchester is that it is very hard to find safe and “joined up” cycle routes.

Having cycled extensively in Europe as well as the odd trip to Africa and Asia, I’m sorry to say that cycling in this country compares less than favourably.

Are things improving and moving in the right direction?

I sincerely hope so, for the sake of future generations.
