DAVE Austin was in fine form to win Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Seniors' Three Clubs and a Putter competition.

Austin posted an extremely good score of 38 points using just a three wood, nine wood and pitching wedge.

Rod Harman scored a very good 32 points in division two, after choosing a three wood, five rescue and a nine iron.

Despite the rather disappointing field, those that did brave the cold conditions enjoyed a bright day.

Meanwhile, 15 teams of three played in Stoke by Nayland's Two Thorns and a Rose scramble competition, on the Gainsborough course.

Each team comprised of a lady (the rose) and two men (the two thorns), with each person playing their ball from the position of the best previous shot from the three taken.

Cold but bright conditions, with an early frost, meant the competition was played wholly on temporary greens, giving rise to some very good scores.

The top three teams were separated by a shot, with Bev and Ian Thompson together with Del Prichard victorious with a score of 54.6.

In second place were Tim and Tracey Dickens with Don Wiggins, while in third were Steve Clark, Cyril Williams and Janet Hodge, with a score of 55.6.

Stoke by Nayland GC's Ladies played an 18-hole four ball better ball competition, on the Gainsborough course.

Jo Little and Jane Golding were victorious with 43 points, finishing ten points ahead of Jackie Frost and Tracey Dickens.

A total of 25 Stoke by Nayland Ladies were on the Constable Course to play a nine-hole stableford off Blue or Yellow tees.

The overall winner was Jane Golding with 21 points, ahead of runner-up Margaret Bentley (19 points) and third-placed Anne Hemmings (18 points).

Although the course was a bit soggy underfoot, there was only one temporary green.

In the bronze division, Trish Jackson won with 20 points.

She finished a point ahead of runner-up Diana Harris and two points clear of Caroline Lowe, who was third.

Jackie Trudgett won the Copper Division, with 12 points.

Stoke by Nayland's Ladies section raised £3,545.75 for 2017 Lady Captain Anne Hemmings' chosen charity, Suffolk Mind.

Hemmings and Ladies veterans captain Diana Harris supported the good cause with a year of fundraising.

The money was raised through baking, raffles and personal donations.

And on Lady Captain's Day the ladies could buy a £2 voucher to pay a professional to take their shot across the tenth Gainsborough lake, which proved a total sell-out.
