THE vice-captain's team claimed a resounding win in Playgolf Colchester's eighth annual ladies mini-Solheim Cup competition.

They beat the lady captain's team 4.5-1.5 in the matchplay format, made up of two singles matches, two foursomes and two four ball better ball.

The vice-captain’s team took all of the first three matches, leaving no way back for the captain’s side which fought valiantly to take 1½ points out of the final three matches.

The winning team consisted of Liz Schultz, Jeanette Shea, Lynne Southgate, Susan Wotton, Paula Smith, Pauline Jordan (vice-captain), Linda Smith, Jan Blackmore, Sally Pettitt and Pauline Coxon.

Playgolf Colchester also hosted their annual Ryder Cup captain versus vice-captains tie.

The tradition of a winning vice-captain’s team was broken as Rob Cornish’s team beat Arthur Ramm’s team, 9½-3½.

Only three points separated the first six places in the keenly-contested Playgolf Seniors charity event.

A large field of seniors enjoyed the fun day, alongside a welcome number from the Ladies section.

The top-three places needed countback after carding 39 points, with vice-captain Steve Dale (26) emerging victorious in the charity shield.

His handicap was reduced by one shot, as he became the third successive vice-captain to win the event.

Second place went to Brian Banks (17) followed by third-placed Ken Ellsmore (25).

The competition was played in aid of Macmillan Nurses, which was seniors captain Michael Johnson’s chosen charity.

The longest drives on the 15th hole went to Will Elder for the men and Lucy Sadler for the ladies.

The straightest drives on the ninth hole went to Peter Saye for the men and Maureen Dale for the ladies.

Nearest the pins went to John Homewood on the 16th, Graham Almond on the 14th and Paula Smith on the third.

The ladies held a subsidiary competition alongside the seniors and first place went to Lynne Southgate.

Gina Macmillan was second, with Linda Smith in third place.

A raffle organised by Playgolf's ladies section was well supported and raised proceeds for Lady Captain Maureen Dale’s SENSE charity.

Playgolf Seniors played their second leg at home against Newton Green, trying to overturn a 4½-3 ½ deficit from the away match.

It was a closely-fought affair that finished 4-4 on matches and a resultant loss over the two legs after recent successes left seniors captain Michael Johnson somewhat disappointed.
