STOKE by Nayland Golf Club began their defence of the Norman Plum Trophy with a comprehensive win over Loughton.

They won 6-0 overall, with both their home and away teams running out 3-0 winners.

Stoke by Nayland hosted their nine-hole ladies’ captain versus ladies’ secretary match.

Two teams were drawn and took on a very windy Gainsborough course to play either on the front or the back nine.

More than 30 ladies took part and the new shield was presented by Peter Barfield, who 40 years ago made the old shield which is now full.

The result of the competition was a well-received ‘half’ which will now be shown on the shield for 2016.

Stoke by Nayland’s ladies lost out to Playgolf Colchester in the Mail on Sunday competition.

The midday start gave good weather at Lexden until later in the afternoon when light hailstorms caused a drop in temperature.
